We are very sad to report that Avery Crounse, director of the groundbreaking folk horror film EYES OF FIRE has passed away unexpectedly at age 71. It was an honour to work with Avery on the restoration of his long-unavailable masterwork (after years of trying to locate him), to hear his stories, discover his inspirations, and strangest of all, to learn that Canadian band the Tragically Hip had named one of their albums after one of his photographs (which they also used as the cover of the album). He was one of a kind and so was his film. Rest easy, Avery.

Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched editor and producer @w1nn1th has made her debut feature as director, the doc/horror hybrid RESIDENCY - which just premiered at Rotterdam! And it was co-edited with her editing partner on WDDB, @benjamin_shearn ! My own film debut would have been nothing without the creative instincts and storytelling abilities of these two, so excited to see RESIDENCY unleashed into the world! Congrats Winnie!!!!

Very chuffed to be among the people interviewed for a special folk horror episode of BBC4's SCREENSHOT film show, along with Nikyatu Jusu (NANNY), Mark Jenkin (ENYS MEN) and Robert Eggers (THE WITCH). Here's the official description:

Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode explore folk horror on screen. The genre is commonly associated with British film from the 70s, but Ellen and Mark investigate how it resonates across the globe and its resurgence over the last decade.

Ellen speaks to the author and director of the folk horror documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, Kier-La Janisse about the first folk horror films, the hallmarks of the genre and folk horror's depiction of pastoral and urban settings.

Ellen then talks to director Nikyatu Jusu about her recent film Nanny which won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance last year. They discuss how she uses West African folklore in the film and why she thinks folk horror is culturally specific.

Mark talks to director Mark Jenkin about his upcoming film, Enys Men. They consider the film's relationship to Cornish identity and the landscape as well as why he prefers to call Enys Men a folk film rather than a folk horror film.

And the director of some modern takes on folk horror such as The Witch and The Northman, Robert Eggers, recommends a couple of underseen folk horror gems.
